Undergraduate Program  Minors earned by Chemistry majors

1. There are two types of minors: Plan A and Plan B.

Some programs in the College of Arts & Sciences offer both Plan A and Plan B minors.  Plan A minors are for students with one minor.  Plan B minors are for students with more than one minor.  Most chemistry majors earn two Plan B minors, one in Math and one in something else.

Math minor Plan B (0 cr beyond the chemistry BS major)

About half of chemistry majors earn this minor.  Plan B minors must complete the calculus sequence. Note that Chemistry BS majors are required to complete the calculus sequence (through Math 208 Calculus III).  Chemistry BA majors only have to take Math 208 to earn a Plan B minor.  Now, all you need is a second plan B minor.

Physics minor Plan BI (6 cr beyond the chemistry BS major)

Physics has two Plan B minors; the one with an astronomy emphasis is not described here.  Chemistry majors are already required to complete a one-year sequence (either Phys 141+142 or 211+212) but the BS chemistry majors will have to take both Physics labs (Phys 221+222 for 2 cr). To earn the Plan B, you will also have to take Physical Seminar (Phys 201H for 1 cr), Physics III (Phys 213for 3 cr).

Spanish minor Plan B (6 cr beyond language requirement)

Plan B minors must complete 6 hours from Span 305, 317, 319, 321, or 331.

German minor Plan B (6 cr beyond language requirement)

Plan B minors must complete 6 hours in one language, in courses numbered above 300, including 3 hours from 301, 302, 303, 304.

French minor Plan B (9 cr beyond language requirement)

Plan B minors must complete 9 hours in French courses numbered above 300, including 3 hours from 301, 302, 303, 304.

Math minor Plan A (6 cr beyond the chemistry BS major)

The other half of chemistry majors earn this minor.  Plan A minors must complete the calculus sequence plus two advanced mathematics courses. Note that Chemistry BS majors are required to complete the calculus sequence (through Math 208 Calculus III).  The two advanced courses most commonly taken by chemistry majors are Differential Equations (Math 221 for 3 cr) and Applied Linear Algebra (Math 314 for 3 cr).

Physics minor Plan AI (10 cr beyond the chemistry BS major)

Physics has two Plan A minors; the one with an astronomy emphasis is not described here.  Chemistry majors are already required to complete a one-year sequence (either Phys 141+142 or 211+212) but the BS chemistry majors will have to take both Physics labs (Phys 221+222 for 2 cr). To earn the Plan A, you will also have to take Physical Seminar (Phys 201H for 1 cr), Physics III plus lab (Phys 213+223 for 4 cr), and one more course worth 3 credits.

Biochemistry minor (10 or 11 cr beyond the chemistry BS major)

The Biochemistry program is in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources but offers half of its degrees to students in the College of Arts & Sciences.  The required courses that Chemistry majors already take are Organic Chemistry II and lab (Chem 252 + 254 or 262 + 264) and Biochemistry I (Bioc/Bios/Chem 431 for 4 cr).  To earn a minor in Biochemistry, you will also need to take Biochemistry II (Bioc/Bios/Chem 432 for 2 cr), General Genetics (Bios 206 for 4 cr), and Microbiology lecture and lab (Bios 312 + 313 or 314 for 5 or 4 cr).
